The California Sea Lion can be found from Baja California to British Columbia. The adult females weight 250 pounds while the adult males weigh 900 pounds!
The Northern Elephant Seals are very large...the adult females weigh 1500 pounds and the adult males weigh a hefty 4500 pounds!
Did you also know that every year, over 18,000 beaches across the U.S.A. are closed or considered to be a health risk? We have heard about this on the news for the Los Angeles area especially. It is really important to reduce the use of pesticides, pick up all litter and pet waste, dispose of cigarette butts properly and avoid using single-use plastic bottles to aid in the good health of plant and animal life...these suggestions were made by the Surfrider Foundation.
We will take heed to these suggestions and be sure to pick up after ourselves outside ... especially after seeing the accumulation of garbage at the Ecological Reserve, hearing the stories about the injured or orphaned seals, seeing the seals at the Pacific Marine Mammal Centre... and coming across a dead seal on Huntington Beach. We were all very affected by these encounters and look forward to learning more and doing what we can to help. It really brings us closer to appreciating animal life and recognizing our part in caring for living things.
