Respect the Environment

"If we see the lizards playing dead or looking stunned, we realize they are scared and it's time to set them free." - Lucas

"We found a geckos tail, but then we realized that they shed their tails in defense but a new tail will grow back." -Lucas
Yesterday, we were playing a game where we throw very light volcanic rocks at the other team. Where Josh and Ali's base was, they were picking up rocks to build a wall and then when Ali picked up one of the rocks, there were two striped geckos underneath it. They came to us and told us and we were all saying that's so cool and we wanted to hold them. Then, Josh picked up a rock and put it back down because it was heavy. One of the lizards ran under the rock right at that time and we were worried that it nearly squished him. We thought it was dead so we were really sad. But, Ali went back to get his chair and he saw that it wasn't there anymore. He saw it scurrying away. So, Ali came back and told us it was alive! We were so relieved.

We decided that if there was a big rock we wouldn't pick it up just in case we might squish something by mistake. We had learned not to move natural objects around a lot at the tide pools, beaches or any natural place because it may disturb the environment. Now that we are in the desert, we realize that it's important that we should stick to that rule here as well. We all agreed that if something died, we would basically be losing a part of ourselves.

We stopped the rock game and started looking for more lizards. By the end of the day, we caught and released more than eight lizards. We also saw a tonne of scorpions. They were all small but one was super tiny. It was smaller than an ant. At the end of the day, we decided not to play the rock game anymore but we would definitely look for more lizards, geckos and scorpions again. But, next time we would be extra careful.
