It's 4:28 in the morning, Mountain Time ... Williams Arizona is the location ... I ask myself, gee what has this trip felt more like, Survivor or Amazing Race? *Note to our Parents... be advised some content may be disturbing...hee hee....We are and have been a bunch of stinky, unwashed, untoothbrushed, tats in the hair kinda ruffians waking up each day with one thing in mind...getting to our destination before dark and well, alive... So far, we are still alive, but getting to our destinations before dark has been a challenge as each morning we would leave later than the next and have unexpected delays along the way. Can you imagine ... Matt's bike turned upside down on the bike rack discovered at a gas station, Laurie grabbing the extension mirror before it fell off while on the highway, tire light flashing after two days of driving, (checked tire pressure-it's fine-just changes as air pressure in each state changes) bike rack starting to become unwelded from the bumper, so we are loading the bikes in the trailer each day and have unhitched the bike mount, driving to the KOA in Arizona and having the GPS take us down a bumpy dirt road in the dark with no lighting, no place to turn around and no KOA in sight, minus 3 degree Celcius weather in Arizona! such that we couldn't hook up our water as it might freeze the pipes, signs on the highway that say, "Watch for rocks" but don't really say where, side of the road emergency pee breaks of course and most notably wind, very windy for two days of driving through Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico... wind is a challenge with a trailer... So, those are the highlights of what has made our hearts beat faster at times... made us feel like we are in a reality T.V. show... :)
On the other side of the coin, we have laughed our guts out to a family friendly comedy show on the radio and stories read by me from Stuart Mc Lean's Vinyl Cafe book. We have sung along to 80's music and Pop, played 20 questions, listened to the kids play Mario Kart with each other on their DS's, ate lots of snack food, visited Camping World for the first time, played at parks, watched the sun set and rise in three different time zones and looked on in awe as the landscape changed shape and colour right before our eyes... we have also have viewed stars that light the night sky. We've seen miniature donkeys, a multitude of black cows grazing, odd road signs, 'the largest cross in the Western hemisphere' and gas ranging from $1.87 per gallon to $2.87. We saw signs for McCain and signs for Obama and were in New Mexico to hear who had won the U.S. presidential election. Wow!
We are so thankful for the company of our friends as we go on this adventure. It has been a comfort, a laugh and a release, to have one another.
By the way, Jeff is doing a GREAT job at getting us to our destinations safely. He's more confident with his driving everyday. (side note to parents :))
Kids are happy and excited to hit San Diego today. Temps in 70's and 80's over the next few days!!! I have much more to add, but will have to do so later as today we are leaving in short order so that we can arrive at our final destination before dark... better than that would be in the middle afternoon while the sun is still shining.
