There are defining moments in your life that you will never forget.
On Saturday, I had one of those.
We attended a 50th Birthday Party for my cousin Steven.
50 years of age is significant for anyone... especially significant for Steve.
Steve has ALS and is the longest survivor of the illness besides Stephen Hawking.
He was diagnosed when he was in his twenties - a recent Queen's University Phys. Ed. grad at the time. As Laurie, his sister mentioned in her speech to him, the diagnosis was devastating at the time. However, the illness has given him purpose. His attitude and message to her and so many others is a constant reminder of the strength of the human spirit.

When we arrived at the party, there were posters, pictures and mementos from his younger days. There was a lot to be said through those pieces of Steven's life - fun-loving, sporty, funny and doesn't mind a beer or two...:)
These objects were representative of just a small glimpse of who Steven is...
Throughout the evening childhood friends, family and Queen's Alumni showed their love to Steve through gestures, memory-sharing and toasts.
We laughed till we cried as we heard story after story and joke after joke. We discovered what an inspiration he has been to countless people. His drive and determination, humour and intelligence have made an impression on so many, young and old alike.
This event was special to me because I learned more about who Steven is. We love our family members because they are family. But, do we really know who they are; what their strengths and passions are? Additionally, I am humbled and enlightened. The reason being, when you see Steve, there is a sadness and sometimes uncertainty about what to say and how to act. But, I don't feel that now. I only feel pride and admiration. If you had felt the energy of the place, you'd know what I mean. This party was not about feeling sorry for Steve's situation, it was a true celebration of his valuable life. Uplifting and joyous... which is how he would want it I'm sure.
I am so pleased that I have the honour of saying that Steve is related to me.
I am filled with gratitude that we shared in his special day.
I am hopeful that I will embrace life fully and persevere when life throws its curve balls.
If I'm half the person Steven is, I would be blessed.
