Yesterday, we joined a group called Rainbow Kids. It's an inclusive, non-denominational support group for homeschoolers in the Orange County area who get together for field trips and park days, just as we had experienced at home. We were invited into to the group via Maryann Malkoff. You may remember her name from an earlier post. She was the woman who had inspired our trip originally. When I contacted her to thank her and let her know we had made it on the road, we found out she was staying in Orange County the same time we were. Maryann raved about Rainbow Kids and said it was the best group around, so off we went to Buena Park on a sunny Thursday afternoon.
We were excited to meet people from California who do what we do! Also, the boys were thrilled to be a part of the creation of a 'boffer'. I just like to say boffer...boffering...it just sounds fun in and of itself. The group was going to make boffers and have boffer battles at the park that day. What a perfect introductory activity to 3 energetic, Star Wars loving boys! Boffers are made out of PVC piping, thick foam and duct tape essentially. You can personalize your boffer and then go have fun battling with your opponent. There are different types of boffer battles, some inspired by the author J.R.R. Tolkien. These battles have specific rules for combat for fairness and safety. It appeared to be a great way to get out aggression, exercise, use large gross motor skills and strategy and just have a good time!
The boys met other kids their own age with similar interests and look forward to seeing them again next week in Costa Mesa for a Medieval-times event. More boffering of course to be had I'm sure! We intend to stick with the group for this month and visit with them again if we come back this way in the future. Perhaps the kids will have more email pals from So Cal!
